Five great bedroom themes

The bedroom is probably the most intimate and personal space you will have in your house. For many people it is the ultimate refuge from the world. Particularly during these cold winter mornings! (I know it still fall, but my room was cold!) If there is any room that is worth experimenting with then it is your bedroom. Not that I’m suggesting you start painting it black with an acid pink trim. I mean you can if you want to, but I suspect you would regret it. Anyway here are a few themes to get you thinking:

Asian:

Rooms inspired by Japanese or Chinese culture should feature lots of clean lines and neutral colouring. For Japanese themed rooms then Shoji screens and Tatami mats can replace curtains and carpets. In contrast a Chinese theme should be a bit more elaborate with plenty of rich reds and woodwork. Wooden blinds or roller blinds will work better than curtains for this room. Of course you don’t just have to limit yourself to Japan or China. There is a wealth of countries out there, for Korean or Thai themes will give you a unique feel.

Ranch or Rural:

A more traditional option would be to go for a rural or ranch style bedroom. With these bedrooms you can expect to see a lot of wood, wooden floors, wooden blinds and wooden furniture. Along with shaded lights the presence of a large comfortable bed this gives the room a warm cosy feeling. A huge advantage of these styles is that they will take a lot of clutter, meaning that you can also use it to show off your treasures.

Minimalist:

Although it sounds simple, minimalist style is actually quite hard to pull off. White or black paint on the walls can be overpowering so make sure to include the other to help offset it. Another option is go for neutral walls with a simple trim. A bed or a futon along with a wardrobe and maybe a desk and chair is the most furniture you want to have. The advantage of this is that you can position them however you want.

Nautical:

A nautical theme can be hugely inspiring or it can be overwhelming. You want to invoke open spaces and clear skies so use a lot of white and blue, other colours can be added through pictures and decorations so as to help warm the room up. Wooden furniture goes really well with this look. Clean, white painted furniture will give your room an ethereal feel, while natural coloured wood will help to ground the room.

This theme can be very simple. For example you can do it just by adding blue tints and exposed wood to a mainly white room. You can also be more brazen and fill the room with inspiring natural scenes and naval decorations. If you go down this route however make sure your room doesn’t look like that of a small child!

Romantic:

The romantic bedroom will have a lot of red and pink. If you really want to go for it add lots of mirrors and flickering lanterns along with dark coloured walls. If you can get a four poster bed even better. The romantic bedroom will take a lot of inspiration from Arabic and Moroccan themes with lots of pillows and cushions, making it cosy and relaxing. The dark colours and meagre lighting wil need the mirrors to enlarge the space, and prevent it being claustrophobic. Fake candles and lanterns will also help lower the fire risk!

I hope these themes give you some inspiration, there are loads of inspiring rooms out there and you can take inspiration from everything, nature, cities or even your friends!
